In 2016, Women in Technology in Nigeria (WITIN) took a bold step toward bridging the digital skills gap in Nigeria by launching the Young Coders Club at Paul University, Awka. This initiative, introduced during the university’s inaugural Computer Science Education Week, was a major milestone in WITIN’s efforts to promote technology education among students and youth across the country.
The launch of the Young Coders Club created a dedicated hub within the university for grooming young developers — a space where students could explore coding, build applications, and solve real-life problems through technology. This early investment in digital literacy was aimed at empowering students with the skills they need to compete in a rapidly evolving tech-driven world.
At the time, the university leadership acknowledged the importance of the initiative, noting that ICT is a critical driver of national development. With Nigeria looking to diversify its economy beyond oil, empowering youth with tech skills was identified as a key strategy to unlock innovation and drive sustainable growth.
During the event, students presented a range of innovative applications developed through the club, targeting key societal needs. These included:
*A mobile app promoting indigenous cuisine
*A tourism-focused digital guide
*A local security alert platform
*An environmental safety awareness tool
*An agricultural game designed to spark interest in farming
These student-led projects showcased the powerful potential of integrating digital education with real-world problem-solving.
The university’s Department of Computer Science highlighted how initiatives like the Young Coders Club play a vital role in reducing youth unemployment and curbing social unrest. By engaging students in meaningful, skill-based activities, the program provided an alternative path toward self-reliance, creativity, and long-term employability.
Since its launch in 2016, the Young Coders Club has remained a cornerstone of WITIN’s vision — to cultivate a new generation of Nigerian tech leaders through early exposure, hands-on learning, and mentorship. It continues to inspire innovation, collaboration, and a strong foundation for economic empowerment through technology.
