Girls in ICT Bootcamps and Leadership Training for Schools & Alma Maters to mark the ITU International Girls in ICT Day Celebrations 2024

The International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in April to create awareness on the need for more girls and women in ICT. An initiative backed by all ITU Member States in ITU Plenipotentiary Resolution 70. This year’s theme for the Girls in ICT day celebrations is “Leadership“, to underscore the critical need for strong female role models in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. WITIN Summit Girls in ICT Workshop/Outreach

During our 2023 Summit, 174 Girls from underserved communities physically attended WITIN summit as part of our 2023 #GirlsinICT celebration. They were introduced for the first time to Computational Thinking, Artificial Intelligence and Data Analysis with Power Bi. They were also introduced to Microsoft upskilling and reskilling career pathways. Girls also received swags from Google CrowdSource.  Outreaches are excellent opportunities to reach new schools. These girls would be co-opted into our new WITIN Girls Clubs as resources permit.

Teachers Join our Girls in ICT Mentoring

WITIN’s Executive Director, Ms Martha Alade introduced about 30 teachers from all six geopolitical zones in Nigeria to the fascinating world of robotics. She was the facilitator in the Capacity Building Programme on Robotics for Teachers by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy. After the program, teachers were co-opted into our Girls in ICT mentoring program and our teachers.ng network.

Digital Literacy and Online Safety Outreaches

As part of our Access, Digital Literacy and Online Safety Outreaches for Women & Girls in Remote, Rural and Underserved Communities; 10,075 girls were reached in Imo and Rivers States in February 2022.  Students learnt to prevent, identify and respond to cyberbullying.

A case for out-of-school girls through Gender Transformative Education

Rabiatu Yahaya is 16 but only attended primary school till basic basic 3. She dropped out of school due to rising insecurity, poverty and long distance of school to her home. She supports her parents by hawking peanut oil, powder and cake.. She is one of the 15 girls we reached last week via our WomenPRIDE.Africa STEM Outreach in digital literacy. Girls were taught how to safely conduct business online using simple tools like Whatsapp. These girls, though out-of-school; are brilliant and willing to go back to school after going through basic digital literacy programs.

WITIN Congratulated Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin on her historic and phenomenal election as the next ITU Secretary-General! This is an inspiration to women and girls all over the world. We are overwhelmed with joy at this news and we strongly believe that our collective mission to close the gender digital divide would be accelerated.

Girls in ICT Day 2021 Celebrations - Post Covid

For our 2021 Girls in ICT Day celebrations; we had ICT bootcamp in our office, a Tweetchat using #WITINGirls and #GirlsinICT hashtags; the WINSTEM awards as well as Schools Outreaches. The intensive one-day  Bootcamp for girls was on Computational Thinking as we did not have sufficient STEM resources for hands-on. 

Girls in STEM - WinSTEM Contest and Awards

As part of our commitment to the global #HeforShe Movement and to mark the 2021 International Day of Women and Girls in Science; WITIN with the collective contribution of her 2020-2022 advisory board launched the Winning Women and Girls in STEM – WinSTEM Contest and Awards in February – see wit.ng/win. The contest was later named after Dr Chris Uwaje, also a member of our advisory board and a key ideator; to encourage and attract more men to be part of our #HeforShe movement in bringing and retaining more women and girls in STEM.

A total of 48 entries were received and winners selected in a 3-stage assessment. Winners were announced as part of our 2021 #GirlsinICT activities. Last week, WITIN hosted the winners and convener as prizes were presented to beneficiaries. Congrats to the winners and salute to our Advisory Board Members and WITIN Team who worked hard to make this project a huge success. Congrats to Dr Chris Uwaje👊 . More>>

International Day of the Girl Child Events

Our team in Kano state, North Central Nigeria, organized contests to mark this years International Day of the Girl Child. Winners were celebrated.

  • 497 girls reached with digital literacy in Oshodi-Isolo communities in Lagos state to commemorate  the 2021, International Day of the Girl Child. WITIN also recognized some of the NYSC members of Oshodi-Isolo local government, Lagos State, for their diligent service and contributions towards developing their community
